Counseling/Psychotherapy

by Jeannie Krause-Taylor

Counseling & Psychotherapy for Older Adults: Many older adults find it difficult to cope with the changes and losses they experience as they age, especially if they transition to new living arrangements. Therapists serve as supportive listeners who work with individuals to navigate their new roles and the emotions that come with these transitions.Therapists work with older adults to resolve negative and problematic beliefs, behaviors and feelings. Counseling addresses a variety of concerns and symptoms, always respecting the unique needs of each person.

Our counseling and therapy services utilize a wide range of techniques including cognitive-behavioral therapy, supportive therapy, problem-solving therapy, and reminiscence therapy.  We also support and provide guidance in making difficult end-of-life decisions. All services are provided where clients live regardless of whether they live in a private home, senior housing or a skilled nursing facility.

Paying for Therapy & Counseling: For those with Medicare Part B, therapy often has no cost or a very small co-payment depending on the private insurance coverage. Pathways for Aging is able to bill Medicare and secondary insurance providers directly so clients can focus on feeling their best and enjoying life.

Counseling & Therapy for Caregivers: Adult children or other family members caring for an aging loved one often feel stress and guilt over their huge responsibilities. Many adult children find themselves stretched between caring for their children and caring for their aging parents or other family members. Therapists help caregivers work through their own emotions so that they have the energy and ability to care for their loved ones. Pathways for Aging often can bill private insurance for qualifying individuals.

Why Therapy & Counseling Works: Scientific research currently indicates that several therapy treatments are as effective as, if not more than, anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medications in older adults. Most older adults also prefer therapy and counseling over medication for their emotional needs.

In a 2009 Washington University School of Social Work evaluation, Pathways for Aging learned that older adults seen by our social workers have observable improvements in their mood and behavior, and that local geriatric professionals trust our services.

Services for Groups & Organizations: Pathways for Aging also provides counseling and therapy for groups and organizations. We can tailor support groups or presentations specifically for you organization.

  • “I am so grateful to have found Pathways for Aging.  Deb is a great match for my Mother, and her weekly visits give my Mother the chance to talk through her concerns about growing older and not being able to do the things she used to do.  I am less stressed and more relaxed knowing that Pathwas for Aging is there as one more point-of-contact during the week for my Mother.” — Cathy D.

  • “My Mom is much easier to get along with, since she started receiving in-home counseling from her therapist from Pathways for Aging” —- Betsy M.
