March is Social Work Month!

by Jeannie Krause-Taylor, MSW, LCSW, ACSW

Happy Social Work Month! The following is an excerpt from the National Association of  Social Workers website.......

Each year, the National Association of Social Workers honors social workers across the country with National Professional Social Work Month. This important observance is an annual

opportunity for the profession to reflect on its history, celebrate the important work that is being done and look toward a promising future for all those social workers serve.

This year we are focusing on the future of social work and the need to recruit more social workers into the profession. Our recruiting focus for Social Work Month in 2009 -

Social Work: Purpose and Possibility - defines the social work profession. People who become social workers do so because they seek a purpose for their career, and recognize that there are many different paths where a social work degree might lead. We know that social workers are passionate, purpose-driven individuals who want to do an excellent service for individuals and communities.

I believe this sentiment truly describes the social workers of Pathways for Aging. Professional social workers have the opportunity to serve a wide variety of populations in their career. Our social workers have chosen to work with older adults and their families.  Providing psychotherapy and/or care management surrounding both the physical and emotional issues related to aging and end-of-life decision-making, is our passion.

With the aging of our society, the profession anticipates needing even more professional social workers in the years ahead. We are fortunate to have a social work student, 2009 MSW candidate, Becky Schwantes, choose Pathways for her practicum (intership) as part of her training. Her career goals include providing mental health services to older adults. To this end, she is seeing some of our clients for individual counseling and she is assisting us in developing positive aging and bereavement programs which we will take bring to the community.

Becky has developed an on-line survey, enabling us to  seek input from community organizations who may be interested in hosting a presentation.  If you have not received a survey, and would like to, please contact us through our website, and one will be sent to you.

These are just a few of the ways social workers help members of our community; I hope you will join us in celebrating National Professional Social Work Month, by honoring the social workers you know during March.
